Introduction

The subject called “Spineless animals breeding” was opened at the Agronomic Faculty in the year 2000 - 2001. It is guaranteed by the author of this report and this subject is being lectured only here. As a part of this subject there is also lectured a breeding of molluscs, where there are emphasised two major topics: meat production of some species and rescue breedings of endangered species. A collection of living molluscs have been collected for the purposes of this subject. A target of this report is to present a part of the collection, which includes more or less exotic species, which we have managed to breed 14 taxons.

Methods

The collection had been started before the subject was launched - approximately in 1999. The bred material is being obtained either by purchasing or as gifts from scientificians, who worked in exotic countries. The bred equipment was mainly financed from private means of the author and partly from the Zoology division and partly from internal AF grants. The same means are used to cover the collection maintanance. The breedings are partly deposited in a private property of the author and partly in the object of the Zoology division in an experimental stable, where there are presently run diploma and doctoral research works. The observation and experimental works with the living molluscs have already brought first publications: Funk et Vrabec (2000, 2002), Hes, et al. (2001, 2002a, b, c, d), Vrabec (2001a, b), Vrabec et Fechtner (2000), Vrabec et Funk (2001a, b), Vrabec et al. (2002), Vrabec et Matoušek (2001a, b). There are advanced cooperations among other bred collections in the CZ (mainly the ZOO Plzeň) and in abroad (ZOO Poznaň). There is a perspective of further growing of the collection and a subsequent development of a scientific research thanks to the progressive research of breeding conditions, breeding biology of molluscs and other problems. Regarding that we welcome any addition into our live collection.

Results

List of the bred taxons

The species listed below are only species that do not occur in the nature of the Czech Republic. The species ranging is according to the systém used in Abbot (1989), corigated by Pfleger (1999), the nomenclature of the genus Achatina is according to Bequaret (1950). There is a locality after the latin name, in case the material was obtained straight from the nature. Species that were successfully bred are marked with *. Marks +, -, † or the abreviation “S” describe the present stage of our bred population: + = number of individuals is rising, - = number of individuals is decreasing (the population is diing out), † = the population died out, S = the number of individuals is more or less stagnationg. We still were not able to determine some imported species, therefore they are presented only by their family names. We cooperate with specialists abroad to determine the unknown species.
